Critic's Anxiety
Ak, reviewing HWO on the forum... I don't wanna sound mean, but I don't wanna lie.
"I am SO over it. Split was just bad, but this kinda just makes it worse, cos you can tell they're really trying and still not getting there. Or maybe, for them, they are, but I'm not feeling it. That said, if the kids don't love it, there's something wrong with them. It's all very nice, and stuff, and... well... okay. I gotta say it. It sounds so fucking much like Better Than Ezra I might actually cry."
Or so I thought after listen one. After the second, I posted this:
"In order to truely like this album for what it is, I would have to forget that it was Gomez, because the reasons I like them as much as I do don't hold in this album. I'm not feeling it. That said, if the kids don't love it, there's something wrong with them. It's all very nice, and stuff, and... well... okay. I gotta say it. It sounds so fucking much like Better Than Ezra I might actually cry.
Anyway, I've decided to express myself in pros and cons.
: ) Love the wailing country guitars.
: ( Where did Olly go? Do I not have my bass turned up loud enough?
: ) Nice to hear a different recording of Hamoa Beach, I always liked that song.
: ( What's with the random bit of 'Brother' thrown in there? Not all recycling is good.
: ) Notice, I'm starting to like Ian more.
: ( Too many 'sweeping melodies'.
: ) See the World will probably translate really well live.
: ( Sha la la la la? Huh? I'm sorry, is this a coming of age movie soundtrack?
: ) The beginning of the song HWO is channelling the 80s.
: ( The rest of it is not. It's kinda dull after the first bit.
: ) Hamoa Beach.
: ( girlshapedlovedrug will end up on the OC, this will be the beginning of the end.
: ) Good delivery from Tom in Woman!Man
: ( Woman!Man is not about a womanman. That was disappointing.
: ) Chasing Ghosts is gonna be a good end of the night song. That bit where you lie down and die.
: ( Tear Your Love Apart starts really well, then turns into another song in which Ben whines about a girl.
: ) Charley Patton. I think Ian should make solo albums.
: ( In general it's a bit normal/generic/safe/American.
So yeah, this is how I feel today. I'll probably change my mind after a while. I'd like to, anyway. At least it's better than Split.
I absolutely disagree with it being better than In Our Gun, by the way."
Yeah, so I reckon I'll be able to stand by that for a while.

Oh the things I miss by not actually being on those forums. (Since I started running one I have absolutely no desire to spend more time than I am forced to looking at new threads. Blergh.)
So, yeah, how is everyone hearing these songs already???
I'm happy that I like electro-Gomez as much as acousticy-Gomez, and I have been there since "Bring it On". I know I am judged, but I actually like "In Our Gun" the most... *cowers*
In Our Gun is fantastic. Purr...
Phew.
Sometimes I think I'm the living incarnate of the Army Dub. Heh.
Rex Kramer all the way baby... and the Even Song. And... you know, the rest of them.
